A man falls victim to the motorway – and the rescue workers do not reach him because the drivers do not form a rescue lane. As they walk on foot, they are even mocked. The fire brigade now wants to display the blockers.
Theo Herrmann is still stunned a day later: “They asked me what I would imagine, who I was at all, and I should not make such a circus.” 59 years, Herrmann is old, he has been with the fire brigade Mörfelden for 46 years, now as deputy city brigade inspector – “but I have not experienced it yet.” This is a new dimension, “he says. Furnished, by wild men. And all because he wanted to help a severely injured person.
What happened? When working on a motorway bridge near Weiterstadt, a scaffolding contractor plunged five meters into the ground on a restricted section of the A5 towards the south on Wednesday at around 16:20. The 49-year-old injured himself heavily. At the accident site, a traffic jam quickly developed. Emergency physicians and fire brigades were alerted.
A police car with the signal “Bitte Resettungsgasse bilden” led two rescue cars through the traffic jam, the drivers also drove as required left and right to let the vehicles through – but then meant “a few Schlaumeier”, as Herrmann says they could be behind the Vehicles also drive through the escape lane and thus get faster through the traffic jam.
When three large vehicles of the fire brigade Mörfelden – in one of them sat Herrmann – and an emergency car wanted also by the rescue lane, was now blocked. “For the first two kilometers, we needed more than 20 minutes, and then there was nothing left to stop the cars, grab our Sani backpacks and walk the last 800 meters, with uniform and helmet,” says Herrmann . On the way, they had pointed out the traffic to their drivers – and were laughed at.
“We are there voluntarily,” says Herrmann, “and we are there to help, not to make us fool.” He told people to imagine that they had themselves been killed – “they just say, ‘I just had bad luck.'” Of some 30 particularly brave drivers, the rescue workers took photos, they are to be brought on display on Friday. The Bild-Zeitung had first reported on the new development. It is still unclear whether this is determined by an administrative offense or a criminal offense.
Until Friday afternoon, however, no announcement was received by the motorway police or the police department of Southern Hesse, as its spokesman Bernd Hochstädter said. Mörfelder firefighters had told him that they had already advertised the ads. Perhaps the mail server with the e-mails with many attached photos were asked, said Hochstädter.
Time for the pictures was only because the injured was now only provided: accidentally an emergency surgeon on the opposite direction at the accident site, who took care of the scaffolder, landed on the counter-track of the rescue helicopter and brought the man to a Frankfurt hospital. “But if someone is pinched, and we’re not going through, it’s about minutes, until we’ve fought through the traffic jam for half an hour,” he says.
Time and again, Hesse is being discussed about rescue routes. Thus the deployment delayed three weeks ago on the A67 at Rüsselsheim by about one hour, because no escape lane was formed or closed again. Two weeks ago, helpers had to run two kilometers on the A7 near Kassel-Mitte . The problem here was: Because of a construction site the highway was so narrow that no escape was possible .
This was not the case on Wednesday on the A5 – the first hospitals came through. Herrmann is the most annoyed about the reaction of those affected. “It always happens that someone is sleeping in the escape road, or people are taking photos, but this absolute equivalency is new.”
The duty to rescue is regulated in the road traffic regulations in paragraph 11, paragraph 2 . It must be complied with even if there is no emergency situation. Always between the left and the remaining lanes. If you do not stick to it, you will face a fine of 20 euros. Elsewhere, this is more expensive: In Austria the infringement costs 726 euros.
In addition there is the criminal offense “Resistance against persons, which are equal to enforcement officials”, regulated in paragraph 114 criminal code. According to this, “anyone who impedes the fire brigade, catastrophe protection or a rescue service by violence or by threat of violence in the case of accidents or common danger or emergency”
According to the police and prosecutor’s office in Darmstadt, this criminal offense does not exist in the current case. To this end, a determination must be made, as well as violence in the disability of firefighters.

Peer pressure puts kids in tough spots. Often, young people are forced to do things they don’t always want to do, because refusing would jeopardize their social standing, and when you’re a teenager, your social standing is everything.
This dad came up with a smart way to help kids out of those binds, without losing face.
Bert Fulks is a youth minister and educator at Empty Stone Ministry with three kids of his own. Every week, he spends an hour with teens struggling through addiction, and in a recent session, he asked a simple question.
“How many of you have found yourself in situations where things started happening that you weren’t comfortable with, but you stuck around, mainly because you felt like you didn’t have a way out?”
Every kid raised their hand. And the dad came up with a great idea.
As Fulks wrote on his blog, he remembers the feeling. “I still recall my first time drinking beer at a friend’s house in junior high school—I hated it, but I felt cornered. As an adult, that now seems silly, but it was my reality at the time. “Peer pressure” was a frivolous term for an often silent, but very real thing; and I certainly couldn’t call my parents and ask them to rescue me. I wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place. ”
Now, thanks to his “X-Plan,” kids have a simple way out.
Fulks uses it with his own kids, and here’s how it works. If his son is in a tough situation he doesn’t want to be in, he simply texts one of his parents the letter “X” and upon receiving it, his mom or dad calls him and tells him they need him to come home ASAP. It allows the kid to bail with a bulletproof excuse – his parents are lame! – without raising an eyebrow. Because if there’s anything more universal to teenagers than peer pressure, it’s uncool parents.
Trust goes both ways (can you tell I’m a dad?) and if we parents want our kids to rely on us, we need to give them a reason to. If we don’t, they’ll never take advantage of the X-Plan.
Like Fulks, we can all remember times when we were backed into uncomfortable situations, stuck between a rock and a hard place, and with potentially disappointed and angry parents waiting in the wings to boot. The X-Plan offers kids an opportunity to avoid some of those tough spots, and, by offering our trust, allows parents to offer them the help they need in their most difficult moments.
Fulks ends his blog post with a pleas to share his X-Plan. “I beg you to share this piece. If this somehow gives just one kid a way out of a bad situation, we can all feel privileged to have been a part of that.”

If you’re an American citizen, chances are you eat dinner between 5 and 8pm. If you’re European or South American, you might not eat until 10 at night. But according to a new study published by The Obesity Society, eating dinner at an earlier time – or not at all – may help you burn more fat at night, and curb hunger swings, therefore assisting your weight loss.
“We found that eating between 8am and 2pm followed by an 18-hour daily fast burned more fat and kept appetite levels more even throughout the day, in comparison to eating between 8am and 8pm, which is average for Americans,” Dr. Peterson explained.
Most Americans are inclined to skip breakfast (the most important meal of the day, many say) as a step towards weight loss. But this new study proved that skipping dinner, or what some may consider a late lunch, is actually more effective. “Many aspects of metabolism are at their optimal functioning in the morning,” the study says.
To conduct the study, Dr. Peterson and colleagues followed eleven overweight men and women over four days of eating between 8am and 2pm, and then four days of eating between 8am and 8pm. All those participating followed both eating schedules, ate the same number of calories during both schedules, and completed supervised testing.After the eight days were up, the researchers tested the impact of early Time-Restricted Feeding on calories burned, fat burned and appetite. Researchers found that early Time-Restricted Feeding, “improved fat and protein oxidation, and daily hunger swings among other health indicators.”
Dale Schoeller, PhD, FTOS spokesperson for The Obesity Society and Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, is excited to report that there is finally proof that eating times have a direct affect on our metabolisms. He said, “With additional research on early-time restricted feeding on humans, we can create a more complete picture of how this innovative method can best help prevent and treat obesity.”
For now, this study sheds light on how late-night snacking really can affect your overall health. But until there’s enough research to prove that eating after 2pm is a dire no-no, don’t go changing the time of your dinner reservations just yet.
